Enter a start and end time.

How it works

  1. Choose a mode: two times, a whole work week, or adding time to a clock.
  2. Enter start and end times in 24-hour or your device format, plus any unpaid break.
  3. Read hours and minutes, decimal hours for payroll, and the regular/overtime split.

Frequently asked questions

Does it handle a shift that runs past midnight?

Yes. When the end time is earlier than the start time the calculator adds 24 hours automatically, so 22:00 to 06:30 returns 8 hours 30 minutes rather than a negative number.

What are decimal hours and why do I need them?

Payroll systems normally take hours as a decimal rather than hours and minutes: 8 hours 20 minutes is 8.33 hours. Every duration here is calculated in whole minutes first, then converted, so the decimal never drifts.

How is overtime worked out?

Hours above your weekly threshold — 40 by default, the FLSA figure — are counted as overtime and paid at 1.5× if you enter an hourly rate. Your country, contract or union agreement may use a different threshold or multiplier, so change the threshold to match.

Is the break deducted from pay?

Yes, the break you enter is treated as unpaid and subtracted from the shift. If your break is paid, set it to zero.

What if start and end are the same time?

That is read as a full 24-hour shift, not zero, which is the behaviour a work-hours calculator needs.

Examples

How long is a 09:15–17:40 shift with a 30-minute break?
7 h 55 min of work (7.92 hours): 8 h 25 min on the clock, minus the break.
What time is it 2 h 45 min after 22:30?
01:15 the next day.
How many hours are five 09:00–17:30 shifts with 30-minute breaks?
40 hours — 8 a day. At 20 an hour, that is 800 for the week.
