GPA policies differ by school. The 4.0 scale and Honors / AP / IB adjustments here reflect the most common US convention — verify the rules your registrar uses before relying on the number.
How the GPA calculation works
- Add one row per course. Type a course name (optional), pick the letter grade and enter the credit hours.
- Toggle weighted GPA if your school uses AP, honors or IB; each row then asks for the course type so the bonus is applied individually.
- Read both GPAs on the result panel: the unweighted one (credit-weighted, no bonus) and the weighted one, which adds the honors, AP or IB bonus.
Frequently asked questions
What GPA scale does the calculator use?
The standard 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D− = 0.7, F = 0.0. A+ counts as 4.0 because most US schools do not award extra points above an A.
How does weighted GPA work?
Both GPAs multiply each course by its credit hours. The weighted one also adds a +1.0 bonus for AP and IB classes, +0.5 for honors, and 0 for regular. The bonus rule is the most common US convention; if your school uses a different one, verify the rules your registrar actually applies before relying on the number.
Can I calculate GPA for one semester only?
Yes — add only that semester's courses. Cumulative GPA across multiple semesters can be computed by adding every term's courses into one list; credit weighting carries through automatically.
What about pass/fail or audited courses?
Pass/fail and audited courses are excluded. Only letter-graded courses with non-zero credits count toward the GPA, which is the convention used by most registrars.
Examples
- Three courses, A (3 cr), B+ (4 cr), A− (3 cr), all regular.
- (12.0 + 13.2 + 11.1) / 10 = 3.63 — unweighted and weighted agree, because no course carries a bonus. The heavier-credit B+ pulls it below the 3.67 a plain average of the letter grades would suggest.
- Same courses, but mark the B+ as honors.
- Weighted GPA becomes (12.0 + 15.2 + 11.1) / 10 = 3.83; the unweighted GPA stays at 3.63, because it never includes the bonus.
