Frequently asked questions
Is the answer rounded?
Never. Fractions use exact integer arithmetic and are reduced to lowest terms; only the optional decimal view rounds for display.
Are negative and improper fractions supported?
Yes — signs normalize to the numerator, and improper fractions reduce normally.
How do you add fractions with different denominators?
Rewrite both over a common denominator, add the numerators, then reduce. For 3/4 + 5/6 the least common denominator is 12, so 9/12 + 10/12 = 19/12.
How do you turn an improper fraction into a mixed number?
Divide the numerator by the denominator: the quotient is the whole part and the remainder stays over the same denominator. 19 ÷ 12 is 1 remainder 7, so 19/12 = 1 7/12.
Examples
- 3/4 + 5/6
- 19/12, or 1 7/12 as a mixed number (1.5833). Over the common denominator 12: 9/12 + 10/12 = 19/12.
- 2/3 ÷ 4/9
- 3/2 (1.5). Dividing by 4/9 is multiplying by its reciprocal: 2/3 × 9/4 = 18/12 = 3/2.
- 5/8 − 1/3
- 7/24 (0.2917). Over the common denominator 24: 15/24 − 8/24 = 7/24.
