Inputs

Calendar

Every date field, picker and result uses this calendar.

optional

Breed does not change the due date — gestation is 63 days for every size. It does predict the litter.

Enter Mating date and the result fills in as you type.

How it works

  1. Enter the date your dog was mated — or the earliest likely date if more than one mating took place.
  2. Optionally add her name so the result reads naturally.
  3. Read the estimated whelping date, the normal 58–68 day window, how far along she is, and the ultrasound, x-ray and whelping-box dates.

Frequently asked questions

How long are dogs pregnant?

Canine gestation averages 63 days from mating, and 58 to 68 days is considered normal. That spread exists because sperm can survive for several days and ovulation may happen before or after the mating itself, which is why the calculator shows a window rather than one certain date.

Why do vets quote 63 days exactly?

Measured from ovulation — established by progesterone testing or an LH surge — whelping is remarkably consistent at 63 days give or take a day. Measured from a mating date, which is all this calculator has, the same pregnancy can land anywhere in the 58 to 68 day window.

Does breed or litter size change the due date?

Only slightly. Large litters tend to arrive a little earlier and single-puppy litters a little later, but the effect is small next to the uncertainty in the mating date itself. Size and breed do not shift the 63-day average in any reliable way.

When can the pregnancy be confirmed?

Ultrasound can usually detect puppies and a heartbeat from about day 25, and an x-ray can count skeletons from around day 45. Those two dates are shown in the results so you can book the appointments.

What if she goes past the window?

Puppies born before day 58 are usually premature, and a bitch still not whelping after day 68 — or showing a temperature drop with no labour, dark discharge or straining without a puppy — needs to be seen the same day. Contact your vet rather than waiting.

Is this veterinary advice?

No. It is date arithmetic on published averages, meant to help you plan whelping. Your vet is the only reliable source for your dog’s health.
