Frequently asked questions

What convention does the cat calculator use?

The widely accepted veterinary convention: the first cat year counts roughly as 15 human years, the second adds about 9 (24 at age two), and each year after adds about 4.

Does breed matter for cats?

Unlike dogs, feline medicine does not materially differentiate aging by breed for this conversion, so one general method applies to all cats.

Examples

How old is a 3-year-old cat in human years?
About 28: 15 for the first year, 9 for the second, then roughly 4 a year. That places the cat in its adult stage.
And a 1-year-old kitten?
About 15 — the first year covers the fastest development, which is why it counts for so much.
